Sanusi who was former Governor of the Central Bank
of Nigeria (CBN) became the 14th Emir of Kano last June. He is allegedly marrying
the Lamido's daughter to deepen royal bond between Adamawa and Kano.
Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II (Mallam Sanusi
Lamido) is said to be set to take the beautiful 17-year-old daughter of the
Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa, as his fourth
wife.
Sanusi is an accomplished banker and his decision to take a new wife is in line with Islamic injunction which prescribes a maximum of four wives for those who can treat all of them equally. Already, Sanusi has three beautiful wives - Sadiya, Maryam and Rakiya.
Like in ancient times when bonds between empires
were deepened by marriages among royals and nobles across boundaries, the
betrothal of the Adamawa princess to Emir Sanusi II may also be a move to
deepen royal bond between Adamawa and Kano. Historically, both emirates have
similar origins in the 19 century Usman dan Fodio's jihad.
Responding to a question about
marriage between adult men and underage girls, the Emir of Kano stated that he
fully supports the right of children not to get forcibly married before
attaining the constitutionally stipulated age of 18 years.
He further stated that he has not
and will not contract a marriage with any woman under 18.
He said the stories making the
rounds were only meant to know his intentions. While not totally ruling out the
possibility of marrying a fourth wife, the Emir advised people to wait to see
the real age of his wife if he decides to contract another marriage.
